TIRANA, Sept. 25 – Albanian President Bujar Nishani attended the 71st Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York last week, giving a speech that focused on the humanitarian and refugee crisis as well as on Albania’s approach and commitment to UN’s basic principles for a peaceful and sustainable world.
In his remarks, President Nishani noted that Albania is convinced that current challenges require a more global collaboration.
“Albania has the required consciousness and receptiveness in terms of challenges that the world is facing. My country supports joint efforts and is convinced that preventing conflicts and guaranteeing peace and security demands closer collaboration,” Nishani said.
He also underlined the importance of addressing the refugee crisis and religious based violence, highlighting the example of Albania, whose society abides to a centuries long tradition of religious harmony.
“Albania praises the irreplaceable role of United Nations in the fight against terrorism and in preventing violent extremism,” Nishani added. “The world needs to amend the methodology in dealing, collaborating and tackling migration in a more coordinated and consistent manner.”
In his speech, president Nishani also praised the role of Kosovo in the region, stressing that Kosovo’s independence has contributed to strengthen peace, stability and reconciliation in Balkans.
He expressed his hope that new UN member countries will continue to recognize Kosovo in the future.
President Nishani also held bilateral talks with leaders of other countries and meet with representatives of Albanian community living in the United States.
