STRASBOURG, Feb. 18, 2022 – A delegation from the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe will carry out a remote election observation mission on Feb. 24 and 25 ahead of the partial local elections scheduled for March 6 in Albania.

The delegation will hold online briefings with representatives of the international community in Tirana, Central Electoral Commission Chairman Ilirjan Celibashi and with the Albanian delegation to the Congress and local government associations.

Video briefings are also planned with domestic NGOs, media and with representatives of political subjects running in the elections of March 6 March.

Gunn-Marit Helgesen of Norway will head the mission, which also includes representatives from the UK, Slovenia and Denmark.

Albania is holding special elections in six municipalities, including the large cities of Durres and Shkoder, to elect mayors to complete terms that end next year. The vacancies have arisen for several reasons, including resignations. Three political groupings are competing.
