TIRANA, Dec 8 – The former politically persecuted have harshly complained that the centre-right government of the Democratic party of Prime Minister Sali Berisha has not fulfilled their request for compensation for the suffering they endured during the former communist regime.
Besim Ndregjoni, of their association, said they had sent a letter with ten requests to the president, prime minister and also parliament speaker.
They seek financial compensation, opening the files of the former communist secret police, Sigurimi, and also denouncing the communist officials.
They complained that the former top communist judge was compensated for his prison terms after the fall of communism in 1990 at a time when they had yet to receive anything for the years of imprisonment they had suffered during communism.
They said the government has asked them to supply documentation, which they have difficulty finding in the archive, like the court verdicts.
Ndregjoni told the Gazeta Shqiptare newspaper that the political parties are only exploiting them during elections and did not pay attention to their requests afterwards.
