Customs duty revenues rise 14.8% y/y in Jan-May

TIRANA, June 7 – The customs administration says it collected 44.8 billion lek (450 million dollars) in the first five months of 2010, 14.8 percent more than the same period last year.
Customs duty revenues in May reached 10.5 billion lek (100 million dollars), 3 million dollars above the plan, and 20 million dollars more than May 2009.
Albanian exports during the first five months reached 820,000 tons, up from 463,000 tons during the same period last year, said the customs administration in a statement. Exports during the January-May period were worth 30.3 billion lek (310 million dollars), registering a sharp increase of 161 percent year-on-year.
Re-export of goods processed in Albania, mainly shoes and clothes, also increased to 105,000 tons, up from 46,000 in January-May 2009. Re-exports reached 35 billion lek, 32.1 percent more than the first five months of 2010.
Meanwhile, exports in May reached 260,000 tons, worth 10.4 billion lek, up from 123.900 tons worth 7.5 billion lek in May 2009.
Re-export of processed goods in May 2010 reached 7.2 billion lek, increasing by 39 percent year-on-year.
The customs administration considered May as a successful month in the fight against smuggling. Some 14 tons of smuggled cigarettes coming from Montenegro was seized in the Shkodra customs office.
