Durres earthquake frightens residents, but causes no damage

TIRANA, Jan. 21 – An earthquake and several aftershocks, hit western Albania on Monday and Tuesday, causing no damage. Authorities reported that the 4.2 main earthquake took place near the coastal city of Durres, and was also felt in Tirana, Lezha and Kruja.
The tremors caused some panic among local population, but there were no reports of anyone being hurt. Some schools in Durres were closed Monday out of fear of stronger aftershocks.
Durres is the second largest city of Albania, located on the central Albanian coast, about 33 km west of the capital Tirana.
Much of Albania is seismically active with a major fault line under the coastal area.
The official State Seismology Institute said that some 100 tremors took place during the two days, but only a few were actually felt by residents.
