TIRANA, Nov. 26 – Four senior officials of the Aleksander Xhuvani University in Elbasan, 50 kilometers south of capital Tirana, have been accused of abuse of post and corruption for allowing a private business owned by a family members to illegally operate on campus.
Two of the officials were arrested while the rector and another senior official are being probed too, police reported Tuesday.
They are accused of favoring a close family member to get a space in the building for rent.
They have also allegedly falsified documentation in the case.
It was found out that the businesswoman managing the coffee bar inside the university area was holding it illegally and has also been avoiding taxation, hiding its income and not registering the hired personnel.
Fighting corruption is a main area in which Tirana needs to work hard and achieve concrete results along its path toward the integration into the European Union.
