Electricity crisis: Albania uses emergency World Bank loan, revises budget

TIRANA, Aug. 28 – The critical situation that Albania’s hydro-dependent electricity sector has been facing in the past few months due to prolonged drought, has forced the government to make use of an emergency World Bank loan and revise the 2017 budget to increase support to state run companies for electricity purchases. State-run power utility, KESH, which manages the country’s main three hydropower plants currently generating less than a fifth of the country’s needs due to one of the worst droughts in decades, purchased electricity worth €7.2 million for next September, making use of a World Bank €22.4 million loan…
