TIRANA, March 5 – According to official data published by the Institute of Statistics, production of energy decreased by 0.3 percent, as imports increased by 1.8 times in order to meet the demands. As a result exports fell by 3.5 times, compared to the same period a year earlier.
“Net domestic electricity production in this period reached 5,208 GWh from 8,552 GWh of electricity produced in 2018, marking a decrease in production by 39.1 percent. 57.2 percent of the total electricity was generated through public hydropower plants and 42.3 percent was generated through private hydropower plants. Only 0.5 percent of electricity was generated by other generators (renewable energy),” INSTAT reported.
Moreover, despite the increase in private hydro power plants given out as concessions to several companies during the last few years, only a slight difference was observed between the private and public power plants in terms of energy generation.
According to INSTAT, in 2019, public hydro power plants generated 2.981 GWh from 5.851 GWh produced in 2018, while private hydropower plants produced 2.205 GWh from 2,701 GWh produced during the same period a year earlier.
During the fourth quarter of 2019, electricity production decreased by 6.2 percent. However, net domestic electricity production during this period amounted to 1,461 GWh from 1,003 GWh of electricity produced in 2018, marking an increase in production by 45.8 percent. The increase of electricity production during the fourth quarter of 2019 led to the decrease of gross electricity imports by 1.3 times and increase of gross electricity exports by 5.1 times compared to the same period a year earlier.
“In total, electricity consumption decreased by 6.8 percent compared to the same period in 2018. Consumption by households decreased by 3.7 percent, while non-household consumption decreased by 9.5 percent,” INSTAT reported.
