Officials optimist EU members states will give final seal of approval to delayed integration step at a meeting of the EU Council on June 27.
TIRANA, June 4 – The European Commission has reconfirmed “beyond any doubt, with no conditionality or reservations” its recommendation that member states should grant Albania candidate status for membership in the European Union.
In a report released this week, the EU’s executive body said it was recommending, again, without any conditionality that the Council of the European Union member states should move the small Adriatic republic a step closer to the union after repeated rejections since Albania’s application in 2009.
Driven by objections from five wealthy northwestern EU members, the council rejected a similar recommendation by the commission last December, saying it wanted more time to see progress.
