Fewer murders, more drugs and criminal groups stopped in 2006

TIRANA, Dec. 26 – Tirana police held Tuesday a meeting to discuss on what they had done this year and which were the main objectives for 2007. the meetings was attended by all the senior officials of the Interior Ministry. Tirana police is the most important in the country as it covers one-fourth of the country’s population and also the main air entrance with the Mother Teresa international airport.
Tirana police have attacked 53 criminal groups in 41 operations. Compared to 2005 there have been ten murders less this year. Police chief Bajram Ibraj hailed them for the discovery process which was 100 percent this year. Police have arrested 594 wanted persons, or 215 more than a year ago. Ibraj added however that Tirana police should improve its service to the citizens and that road police should improve their service as well.
Guaranteeing local elections remain a top priority for the Tirana police next year. Police will make a reorganization of its service for public order in the capital. They are trying to change the philosophy and the technique of the territory control. Tirana is divided into 21 sectors which have each a 24-hour police patrol. Community police is another objective. The fight against organized crime remains a top priority. Fighting cultivating drugs and attacking distribution persons, not letting them get near schools is a main object of work. In 2006 police have seized 46.7 kg of heroin, 302 kg of marijuana and 3.4 kg of cocaine and arrested 28 persons. Other trafficking also remains a top priority.
