TIRANA, Dec. 21 – Police say fighting drug trafficking remains a top priority.
There are almost daily reports on how police have stopped, confiscated and arrested amounts of drugs mainly going to neighboring Greece or nearby Italy.
Albania remains a traffic route for heroine, now also increasingly for cocaine and also a producer of cannabis sativa.
There is a significant fall in the amount of planting cannabis but there are still cases as police reports say.
In southern Gjirokastra police operation codenamed ‘Rrebeshi’ seized 300 kilograms of hashish found at a four-wheel driving car. The drug was packed in one-kilograms packages. The driver managed to leave but was arrested later. Police are also investigating and have declared at large three other people involved in the traffic which allegedly aimed at taking the drug to Greece.
In central Elbasan city police arrested Edvin Bicaku, 20, after finding 516 grams of cannabis sativa he was trying to transport somewhere.
Trial has started against Gentian Rushani, 34, who was arrested in October with 1.8 kilograms of heroin while he was trying to cross into Greece with a bus and the drugs hidden in his belly.
There are also daily reports in which police says that people are arrested with small amounts (in grams) of cannabis or other drugs trying to sell it.
