TIRANA, Dec. 20 – Albanian lawmakers have drafted a bill which does not limit the taxpayer money spent on expense accounts for former presidents.
The bill for the ‘Presidents of the Republic of Albania’ provides several favors, allowances and privileges to all former presidents of Albania such as Sali Berisha, Rexhep Mejdani, Alfred Moisiu and Bamir Topi.
All of the former heads of state will benefit free accommodation, transport, personal guard, supporting staff, offices and titles.
Article 64 of the new bill says that once the mandate is over, the former president and his or her family members will keep their diplomatic passports and have their medical expenses covered by the state budget.
The law says that any of the country’s former presidents can benefit from other bonuses and rewards at an amount which does not exceed the salary of the president in office.
This is the first time that Albania plans to adopt an organic law for the office of the President of the Republic. The bill comes at the time when the competences of the office of the President have been diminished significantly.
