TIRANA TIMES – TIRANA, April 5

The main trends of globalization and the switch over to digital broadcasting were discussed at a roundtable organized last week at the European University of Tirana.
About 45 people attended the event which aimed to raise awareness on the two topics.
Adrian Civici, the dean of the university, introduced the students to the main characteristics of globalization as a phenomenon, to the notion of the global village, and its relation to democracy and economy in developing countries.
Special attention was paid to the conflict between national values and global ones, both in economy and culture, outlining the pros and cons of globalization in the current debate.
Ilda Londo, research coordinator at the Albanian Media Institute, introduced the participants to the main steps of digital switchover in broadcasting, paying attention to such topics as the fair distribution of licenses, the social dimension of this process, the need for efficiency and fairness from the regulator, the role of the public broadcaster, and the need for a strong public awareness campaign for a smooth switchover.
