TIRANA, Feb. 28 – The Albanian government said Wednesday they were determined to produce the identity cards in the near future to give an end to the disputes and difficulties running form the use of the birth certificates. Prime Minister Sali Berisha said the government would speed up the process of their production, asking the interior ministry to cut the start of such a major project. “The project is very imperative and should start in the shortest time possible. It is extremely important for the Albanian citizens to get equipped with the most modern ID cards,” said Berisha at the government meeting. Berisha also said that decision was also decisive for the free movement of the citizens, saying that in all negotiations for the movement liberalization Albanian authorities had consistently promised to speed up producing their process. “That is also an obligation to identify voters which is an important demand,” he added. Voters’ list has been the main shortcoming from which Albania has always suffered grave consequences in post-communist elections. That has been negatively exploited by the political parties.
