TIRANA, May 3 – Prime Minister Edi Rama said authorities would start a nationwide campaign to audit the quality of fuel at gas stations.

Rama said that poor quality of fuel has resulted in big losses for the consumers and also there has been significant tax evasion from the fuel supplying companies.

He said that if found offering a different fuel quality from what it is supposed to be, based on the laws, the station owners and their employees would face criminal charges.

The association representing the main fuel suppliers said it would support the government efforts “to put order in the market.”

It said the fuel they import is of the highest quality, indicating fuel stations selling an inferior product mix it with lower quality products to to increase profit while decreasing the quality.

The association said its member businesses bring the state budget 600 million euros and employ about 10,000 people and make up one of the “most formalized sectors” in the country.
