TIRANA, March 10 – Struggling Belgian league champion Anderlecht has fired coach John van den Brom and replaced him with his assistant, former Albania international Besnik Hasi.
The Dutchman’s firing came two days after Anderlecht lost 1-0 at 15th- place Leuven, a defeat chairman Rover Vanden Stock called “unworthy” of the Brussels club. Anderlecht is now third in the 16-team league, 12 points behind leader Standard Liege.
Vanden Stock says that after Anderlecht’s ninth loss of the season “no other measure was possible than to thank John van den Brom for his efforts over the last two seasons.” General director Herman Van Holsbeeck says Hasi, a former Anderlecht player, “has the qualities to shake up the squad and make the players live up to their responsibilities.”
