Authorities confirmed 96 new cases in Albania last year
TIRANA, Dec. 1 – Authorities saidSundaythat there have been 96 new HIV-infected cases in the country this year. That takes the total official figure of the cases in post-communist Albania to 671.
Health authorities said the last year has seen the highest rise with the new cases.
The first HIV infected person was found in Albania in 1993.
Most of the cases are with the men, some 70 percent. This year there have been 66 men and 30 women.
According to the authorities, most of the infection, or 93 percent, comes from sexual relations, or unsafe sex practices.
Albania marked on Dec. 1 the international day for the fight against AIDS with several events associated with raising awareness of the disease in Albania.
