TIRANA, Dec.6 – Albania’s economy Ministry declared on Wednesday that it is considering the recommendations of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP)to create two industrial zones to attract investors and raise foreign direct investments. This initiative has been suggested by UNDP as part of a program called Trade Liberalization and Promotion Project – a joint effort of UNDP and the European Union (EU). The first zone, in the west, on the Adriatic Sea, is planned to be developed as a green-field industrial zone. The area is known as the marsh area and is located in the north and northeast of Durres, the country’s largest port region. It covers a total area of 54 hectares and is also close to the existing industrial zone of Porto Romano. The second area is located in Shkoder, Albania’s largest northern region, and will be built as a brown-field industrial area, the ministry said in a statement. The five-hectare site has 30,000 square meters of built-up area which was used for tobacco fermentation. The area has the necessary basic infrastructure but still needs a complete overhaul, the ministry said.
