TIRANA, Dec. 19 – U.S. and EU representatives in Albania condemned the violence that took place in and outside parliament as the temporary chief prosecutor was appointed.

In a statement, the U.S. Embassy called on political parties and actors to facilitate calmness in regards to the situation.

“The United States Embassy strongly condemns the violence that took place during today’s protests in Tirana. We support the right of citizens to peacefully protest, but damaging of public property, releasing of smoke grenades in Parliament and violence are not acceptable. We call on all parties to show restraint and encourage calm,” the statement said.

It added: “The people of Albania should not be surprised that their politicians are fighting amongst themselves. This means the judicial reform is finally being implemented. The Vetting Commissions will soon have their first results. The Prosecutor General who refused to prosecute politicians is gone. We will soon see the creation of the SPAK and BKH to investigate and prosecute high-level corrupt officials. The people of Albania are impatient for justice. And the politicians are afraid.”

Similarly, the European delegation in the country denounced the use of violence in what should have been a peaceful protest, both by opposition members and citizens alike.

“Albanian citizens ask that their chosen representatives show leadership and responsibility, as well as cooperate to achieve important reforms, which are also crucial for Albania’s aspiration to join the EU,” the statement from the delegation said.
