TIRANA, Sept. 6 – The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) has chosen Albanian Socialist, MP Kastriot Islami and Democratic one Aleksander Biberaj to be part of a nine-member delegation, headed by Jean-Charles Gardetto (Monaco, EPP/CD), to observe the parliamentary elections in the Republic of Montenegro on Sunday 10 September 2006. The delegation, which will be in the country from 7 to 12 September, will assess whether the elections in Montenegro meet international – and in particular Council of Europe – standards for democratic elections. Montenegro requested to join the Council of Europe on 6 June 2006. A member of the Council’s Venice Commission, whose work includes making recommendations on electoral laws, will also be present.
Members are due to meet electoral officials and representatives of political parties contesting the elections, as well as journalists and domestic observers, before observing polling on the day of the vote.
