Issuing IDs faster for elections

TIRANA, April 27 – The Interior Ministry has agreed with the private company issuing the IDs and biometric passports in the country to provide faster access and also cover weekends as working days ahead of the May 8 local polls.
The Ministry and its Department of the National Civil Registry have also said they have undertaken all the necessary efforts to clean up and update the voters’ list.
According to the National Register of the National Civil Registry, Albania’s population is 4 279 456 and it has eligible 3 164 859 voters, who are expected to cast their ballots in 4,880 polling stations.
More than 2.7 million Albanians have already applied for the new ID cards and 1.7 million for the new biometric passports.
Albanian citizens will be able to vote even with the old passports on May 8 elections. Besides biometric identification documents, the identity card and the biometric passport, voters will be able to vote even with the old passports, if they are valid.
