TIRANA, Aug 20 – Some 30,000 rails with dangerous healthy elements causing cancer had been sold from Italy to Albania some years ago, an Italian newspaper wrote.
Gazzeta del Mezzogiorno wrote that the rails were sold for 10 dollars a piece and their transport was made free of charge from Italy in 2000 and 2002.
The rails could not be used in Italy due to their dangerous elements but they were sold to Albania in the context of the assistance to the tiny Balkan country.
Albania’s 447 kilometers of railway, subsidized from the government, are in a desperate situation and need a big investment to get rehabilitated. (Tirana Times Staff)
