TIRANA, June 22ؓtarting this week, Albanians can use their Albanian driving licenses when they travel to Italy. The Albanian Ministry of Public Affairs announced that an agreement signed between the two countries last year, which makes possible the mutual recognition of their respective driving licenses, enters into effect this week. A similar agreement is being negotiated with neighbor Greece.
According to the agreement, Albanian tourists traveling to Italy and vice versa, and Albanian immigrants residing in Italy, can now travel in the neighbor country using their own driving license.
Regarding new immigrants to Italy, they can use their Albanian driving license for a year, after which they can benefit from an automatic conversion of their license to an Italian one, free of cost. Immigrants who have lived and worked in Italy for more than three years can convert their license immediately, also free of charge.
The current agreement will save a lot of time and money to citizens from both sides of the Adriatic, but more so to Albanians, of which an estimated 400,000 presently reside in Italy.
