TIRANA, March 29 – Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias paid a short visit to Tirana and counterpart Ditmir Bushati on Thursday for a behind-close-doors meeting.
Kotzia’s arrival to Tirana comes two weeks after President Ilir Meta authorized the progress of negotiations concerning the new maritime agreement between Greece and Albania, which Bushati has claimed will positively replace the unconstitutional agreement the 2010 Democratic government signed.
Bushati told local media relations are in a new phase and that progress has been made in several fields and added the ministers are also working on the meeting date between the countries’ Prime Ministers, Edi Rama and Alexis Tsipras. The date of the meeting, reportedly to take place in April, is still unknown.
While the negotiation work teams are expected to start working on the new maritime agreement soon, both sides have expressed optimism in solving many issues which have remained open-ended through the years. One of them is expected to be the Law on War, not lifted since 1940.
During Tsipras’ visit, local media has reported a new friendship agreement and strategic partnership treaty will be signed between the two prime ministers.
