Marshall center to hold conference with Adriatic Charter countries

TIRANA, Sept. 6 – The Marshall Center will hold two conferences with the Adriatic Charter nations Albania, Croatia and Macedonia in Tirana, Albania Sept. 19 – 22. The first conference will address corruption, organized crime, and illicit trafficking, while the second will address Euro-Atlantic Integration. The Marshall Center will conduct back-to-back conferences with the Adriatic Charter nations of Albania, Croatia and Macedonia in Tirana, Albania Sept. 19 – 22.
Countering Corruption, Organized Crime, and Illicit Trafficking will be the topic of the first conference, which will be co-sponsored by Albanian Ministries of Defense and Interior. The Sept. 19-21 event will involve more than 40 senior representatives who will work toward four goals during the conference:
ՠ evaluating the current situation in South Eastern Europe with regard to corruption, organized crime and illicit trafficking;
ՠ identifying the linkage between corruption, organized crime, illicit trafficking and border security;
ՠ identifying the necessary actions to meet the obligations of the Adriatic Charter and possible steps toward the harmonization of regulations and international protocols; and
ՠ identifying the linkage between corruption, organized crime and illicit trafficking; the corresponding contributions to terrorist activities; and the steps necessary to counter that ideological support for terrorism.
The second conference will be entitled Western Balkans: On The Road To Euro-Atlantic Integration. All representatives to this conference will be Marshall Center alumni.
The goal of the Sept. 21-22 conference is to promote regional and inter-ministerial cooperation supporting Euro-Atlantic integration through an alumni network of security professionals. More than 40 representatives from the Charter nations will work toward three goals:
ՠ discussing the results of the Adriatic Charter Conference and preparing for the next “Western Balkans Euro-Atlantic Integration Perspectives” Conference;
ՠ discussing lessons learned by new NATO and EU members; and
ՠ developing proposals for the way ahead.
Both conferences will be conducted in English and include a series of plenary sessions, working groups and open discussions.
