TIRANA, Oct. 18 – Rubena Moisiu, the head of Tirana’s largest maternity hospital, has resigned a week after an expecting mother and the newborn died at the hospital’s emergency wing.
Family members of the deceased accused the maternity hospital doctors of mismanaging the situation by moving the patient to another hospital during the night and by delaying emergency procedures. Authorities are investigating the case.
Moisiu was not directly involved in the incident, but she had come under intense media pressure as the head of the hospital where it happened.
The Ministry of Health said another experienced doctor, Arben Rugia, would take over the director duties at Koco Gliozheni Hospital.
Moisiu, one of Albania’s best known gynecologists, had been leading the hospital for more than a decade.
