The Albanian Telecommunication Regulatory Entity believes that as Eagle Mobile develops its service and market share, the country’s mobile telephone rates are going to be reduced by up to 55.26 percent. Eagle Mobile, the third Albanian mobile operator, is already operational and covers 92 percent of Albanian territory. It is expected that it will cover the entire country by the end of this month.

Albania to grant the fourth mobile phone license
Ilir Shehu, the chair of the Albanian Telecommunication Regulatory Entity, declared that the Entity is going to move forward in granting the country’s fourth mobile phone license by the end of 2008.
Shehu said the full liberalization of the telecommunications market, and competition between the different mobile operators, is going to reduce the mobile telephone rates.

New methodology to calculate the mobile telephony rates
The Telecommunication Regulatory Entity has already prepared a new system for setting mobile telephone rates. When this system is approved at the end of the month, the three mobile phone companies will reduce their rates as much as 12.9 percent.

WiMAX licenses in 2009
Also, by the end of the year, the Telecommunication Regulatory Entity will call an open international tender for the sale of the first WiMax licenses. The Entity has not decided yet on the number of licenses that will be offered for sale. However, it is expected that it will grant up to four national, and four regional, licenses. WiMAX, the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology that provides wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access.
