TIRANA, Dec. 2 – The Municipality of Tirana has warned retailers not to increase prices for the holidays because they will be audited for abuses if they do.
In what is counter-intuitive compared to other countries, Albanian retailers, especially food sellers, had for years increased prices for the holiday, trying to bank on the increased consumption.
The municipal government in Tirana has for several years taken steps to prevent price abuse which hits the poorest Albanians hardest.
Mayor Erion Veliaj also said that livestock and turkeys, a seasonal tradition, will not be allowed to be sold in the streets.
He added all the capital’s streets will be decorated from a private company hired from the city hall.
Veliaj said that in addition to the downtown area, other streets in the outskirts will be decorated as well.
