TIRANA, Nov. 30 – Selim Muca, head Albania’s Muslim Community, on Tuesday met with Prime Minister Sali Berisha to ask for his support and assistance in building a new mosque and opening a new university, the premier’s office said in a statement.
According to the same statement, Muca was skeptical about the offer made earlier this month by the opposition leader and Tirana Mayor Edi Rama for a new mosque in central Tirana.
Rama said during the Bajram (Eid) festivities that the city hall had planned building a new mosque for the Muslim Community. The mosque is expected to be built just behind the Palace of Culture in downtown Tirana. Rama said they would contact with international architectural studios for the construction draft.
Berisha assured Muca he head the government’s support for both goals.
This is a rare occasion in which Albanian politicians try to cater to religious communities.
