BRUSSELS, Oct 19 – NATO’s high committee held a meeting in Brussels last week to discuss Albania’s membership plan.
Martin Erdmann, NATO Assistant Secretary General, chaired the meeting with the Albanian government delegation, headed by Glori Hysi, in attendance.
Participants reminded Albania that free and fair elections next year, and reforms in the judiciary, remained a top priority for the country’s progress towards NATO membership.
Albania was invited to become a NATO member at its summit in Bucharest in April 2008, and also signed the NATO membership protocol in July. All member countries must ratify the protocol prior to the country receiving full membership, likely at NATO’s next summit in spring 2009.
