New agency created to investigate corruption

TIRANA, Sept. 16 – Prosecutor General’s office reported that a new section or department on investigating corruption and the properties has been launched in an effort to better confront with such a phenomenon that has been the post-communist country’s Achilles’ heel.
It will target mainly senior officials in the country, based on a recent law to check and probe cases of alleged corruption with senior officials, judges, prosecutors. It will also investigate the cases of corruption that senior officials may be accused of during their work.
Fighting corruption remains a top priority and target for the new cabinet, one that has been mentioned so often by the international institutions and also set as a target from the European Union which Albania aims to join one day.
