TIRANA, July 30 – A new ammunition dismantling line has been inaugurated at the Mjekes explosives plant in Elbasan to get rid of 120-mm shells and mortars, the Defence Ministry said in a statement.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony last weekend, deputy Defence Minister Ekrem Spahiu said the plant had successfully destroyed 157 tons of RDX powerful explosive.
“In August this line will be made fully operational to destroy anti-tank mines with an annual capacity of 800 tons,” said Spahija, stressing the need for further training and certification of employees to eliminate possible incidents.
The ministry says the new 120-mm shell and mortar demolition line has an annual capacity of 3,200 tons. Some 1,500 tons are expected to be dismantled by the end of this year.
In March 2008, a blast at an ammunition site in Gerdec village, outside Tirana, killed 26 people and injured another 300.
Albania has some 100,000 tons of excess ammunition stored in former army depots across the country.
