New candidates approved for BoA supervisory council

TIRANA, Nov. 2 – Albania’s parliamentary economy committee approved on Wednesday the two candidacies proposed by the ruling Democratic Party and its Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI) ally for the Supervisory Council of the Bank of Albania. The committee’s majority MPs approved Dhori Kule, the current dean of the Economy Faculty of the University of Tirana, as a proposal by the Democratic Party and Ela Golemi, a financial expert from SMI’s ranks.
The opposition Socialist Party has proposed current MP Ermelinda Meksi, who will have to relinquish her MP mandate if she is nominated.
Earlier this week, the economy parliamentary committee approved the candidacies of current Bank of Albania governor Ardian Fullani who seems to be government’s favourite candidate for the new governor of the country’s central bank, whose term of office expires this month. Government has also proposed Elizabeta Gjoni, the director of the Albanian Financial Supervisory Authority, and Petraq Milo, the Prime Minister’s economic advisor for the vacancy.
The opposition Socialist Party MP described Fullani’s candidacy as politically motivated, saying that the current governor has helped finance the government’s domestic debt by buying the state-owned Dajti Hotel, and is responsible for the rising bas loans portfolio.
