TIRANA, Dec. 1 – Nearly 1,000 prisoners will get to go home before the New Year holiday as part of an amnesty program drafted by the Ministry of Justice.

Officials are also working to reduce jail term for dozens of other prisoners. The amnesty program will provide benefits to over 4,000 convicts, 1,000 of which will walk out of jail immediately, officials from the General Directorate of Prisons announced.

Convicts that will be benefit have been jailed for charges of robbery, illegal power connection, illegal constructions or driving under the influence of alcohol or without a license.

General Directorate of Prisons is currently preparing the full list of people that will see their conviction reduced and those who will walk out of jail, so that the amnesty program can be implemented before the winter holidays.
