TIRANA, Nov. 30 – Spartak Braho, an MP of the ruling Socialist-led coalition, said Wednesday that President Bujar Nishani’s dream of running for a second term will be unrealized.
In a televised interview, Braho said that President Nishani has been “delivering disruptive messages and many of his actions have been legally and politically inaccurate.”
“This dream cannot come true, for this president,” Braho said.
The chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for National Security expressed concern about the issue of surveillance conducted by secret services used for political purposes. Braho has repeatedly accused the State Information Service, SHISH, for collecting allegedly damaging information about police chiefs.
According to Braho, spies of SHISH are ordered to collect information on new appointments in the police force made by the centre-left government of Prime Minister Edi Rama. He often compared SHISH’s alleged practices with those of its communist-era secret police predecessor, called Sigurimi.
President Nishani, who is at odds with the current ruling majority over judicial and diplomatic appointments, has made it clear that he approves of the SHISH spy chief’s record and has no intention of approving his replacement.
“The next government must pay close attention to the issue of illegal wiretapping that is not done for the benefit of the state,” Braho said who has often criticized the actions of President Nishani.
The Socialist Movement for Integration MP also called on authorities to join forces and put an end to the phenomenon of marijuana plantations that has established ties between poor people and organized crime.
“This is a phenomenon linked to poverty. I believe that state authorities were unprepared to deal with this, but I hope that in the future the problem will be solved,” Braho concluded.
