TIRANA, Aug 19 – Ilir Meta, leader of the small opposition Socialist Movement for Integration, saw no chance the opposition would reunite in its fight for power during next year’s parliamentary elections.
Meta’s SMI and Edi Rama’s main opposition Socialist Party broke up in April after the Socialists coordinated their votes to pass the constitutional amendments to change the nation’s voting system, a move which was harshly attacked by the other partners in the opposition coalition.
Meta’s stand on a possible coalition next year has continuously changed. At the moment, he is offering a post-election coalition. On the other hand, he is offering a partnership with the Socialists in the make-up of the electoral code that is to be debated during September in the parliament.
Meta accused the Socialist leadership of being responsible for the break up of the coalition.
At the same time, the Socialists are accusing Meta of breaking up the coalition simply because he was seeking to become the next premier if they win in next year’s polls.
In yet another political move, Meta did not criticize, as before, the former leader of the Socialists, Fatos Nano. He appealed to Nano to re-enter political life. (Tirana Times Staff)
