TIRANA, Sept. 19 – Selim Muà§a, the former religious leader of Albania’s Muslims died Monday at the age of 80.

Muà§a was known for building bridges with other religious communities and reviving the role of faith among worshipers still reeling from the state atheism of the communist regime.

The Muslim Community in Albania described Muà§a as a constant patient presence among Muslim believers.

“He will be remembered fondly for reforming the Albanian Muslim Community and working hard to bring together the community,” said a press release by the Muslim Community, the official organization governing Muslim affairs in Albania.

Muà§a became the second leader of Albania’s Muslim community after the fall of communism. His work led to the operation of 550 mosques in the country and identification of dozens of properties of Muslim believers sequestered by the communists.

He also dedicated himself to improve the education for worshipers in remote areas and boosted investments in the education of new clerics in Tirana, Shkodra, Kavaja, Cà«rrik and Korà§a.

He had earlier retired, citing health reasons, opening the way for the election of new leader for the community.

According to the Muslim Community, Muà§a will be remembered for “his positive spirit and role in promoting dialogue, collaboration and religious harmony in Albania and Balkans.”

In another tribute on Tuesday, Prime Minister Edi Rama said: “Selim Muà§a was determined to ascertain and protect the essence of peace laid out by the commandments of Prophet Muhammad as well as the treasure of religious harmony in our Albania.”

Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta described Muà§a as “one of the pioneers of the revival of Muslim faith in Albania.”

“He was an example of the importance of work, faith and words. The times of great changes need great men,” Meta added.
