TIRANA, May 21 – Candidates for the June 21 municipal elections have officially launched their election bids a month ahead of the election, a period that forces them and the media to abide by specific rules set in the electoral code.

Virtually everyone had ignored the official campaign period and has been campaigning for more than a month.

Municipal elections will be a serious test for the leftist Socialist Party-led coalition government and the main opposition Democratic Party’s coalition.

The Socialists are leading a massive coalition of about 40 political groupings. The Democrats’ coalition is about half the size in terms of numbers of parties. There are also independent candidates and smaller parties going at it alone.
