Ohrid Lake threatened by pollution, authorities threaten to fine polluters

POGRADEC, Aug. 18 – Regional environmental authorities in the southeastern Korca district have threatened to impose heavy fines on the Bucimas commune in Pogradec unless they take immediate steps to stop polluting Ohrid Lake.

Waste materials continue to be deposited near the lake at Tushemisht village alarming authorities due to the serious pollution of the nearby lake.

Commune authorities have been asked to stop depositing additional waste and also to move the existing waste materials from the area.

Ohrid Lake is an important tourist destination in Albania where thousands of local and foreign tourists go every summer for vacations.

Teenager killed in shooting at snooker hall

VLORA, Aug. 20 – A teenager was shot and killed Monday while he was playing snooker in the outskirts of the southwestern port city of Vlora, police said.

Seventeen year-old K. Lulaj was playing snooker with another man in the early morning of Monday when another person shot him using a Kalashnikov near the Industrial park quarter in Vlora.

The other person was injured, however expected to recover, according to authorities.

Police could not say what prompted the attack.
