TIRANA, Sept. 12 – The Mediterranean countries’ ombudsmen have called on the European Union to show solidarity and responsibility to ensure the human rights respect in addressing the migration crisis.

The Association of the Mediterranean Ombudsmen of 28 countries is headed by Albania’s People’s Advocate Igli Totozani.

The association sent a letter to President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Junker saying the EU “is currently facing a historical challenge requiring a principled and sustainable solution that is in keeping with the values of human rights and fundamental freedoms underlying its juridical order and informing its political culture.”

“The degree of success achieved is inextricably bound to the level of genuine solidarity and shared responsibility that the EU and its Member States shall be able to nurture and uphold,” said the letter issued in the Albanian capital Tirana, whose ombudsman chairs the association.
