TIRANA, Sept. 14 – Members of the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party met to discuss the party’s loss in Dibra’s mayoral by-election, which the party has officially said was a result of vote-buying and intimidation by the ruling coalition.
Some senior members of the Democratic Party, however, were rather critical to Democratic Party chairman Lulzim Basha and demanded a thorough analysis on the performance of the opposition during the elections.
MPs Eduard Selami and Majlinda Bregu said the party’s defeat could not simply be explained away with vote-buying, and instead, they insisted on more accountability in regards to the Democratic Party strategies put in place during the by-election, several local media reported.
Basha on the other hand insisted that the elections were “destroyed by the alliance of politics with drug cartels,” whilst Prime Minister Rama urged Basha to not “criminalize an entire city over his party’s loss.”
