Move aims to save endangered animals and allow for replenishment of wildlife populations
TIRANA, Jan. 31 – The Albanian parliament passed a law that places a two-year ban on all hunting, in an effort from the new government to stop the extinction of several endangered wildlife populations.
Authorities say that the ban is necessary to protect species whose numbers had fallen dramatically after two decades of rampant hunting.
The environment ministry says brown bears and eagles are now seriously endangered in mountainous areas of Albania. The number of pheasants and wild quail has also fallen dramatically.
Albania made the same effort some years ago banning small boats in the sea in an effort to stop illegal trafficking of people, drugs and weapons. The memorandum proved successful, with trafficking numbers dropping drastically.
