TIRANA, Nov. 12 – Faced with growing criticism about a lackluster economic environment, Prime Minister Edi Rama told a meeting of the Socialist Party this week that the economy is growing but not at the levels that would be felt in all households.
“We’re not magicians,” Rama said. “But we should continue to work with courage and patience.”
Also faced with protests over a higher education law, the prime minister said the education reform was the right thing to do, and those who oppose it should give it time to see the benefits.
The Socialists say they will be successful in their fight against economic informality just like they were successful in the fight over stopping electricity theft.
Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri said the government had moved Albania from the place with the highest theft of electricity to among best performing.
“Today, the state budget spends three times less to buy energy,” he said, money that can now be sent on schools and roads.
