Police arrest persons setting fires

TIRANA, Aug. 22 – Police said Wednesday they had arrested scores of people suspected of setting fires for personal profit.

A police statement said five persons were arrested and accused of property destruction by fire in Gjirokastra, Elbasan and Erseke.

Police said they had started 75 penal procedures since June and 45 persons have been arrested for setting fire, a charge that carries a punishment of up to 10 years imprisonment.

Among police figures, there have been over 800 fires set throughout the country since June.
