TIRANA, Aug. 12 – Police in the southern port city of Vlora said they had detained 40 migrants from the east African nation of Eritrea trying to illegally cross over to nearby Italy.
The migrants had come to Albania from neighboring Greece passing through the mountains between the two countries.
Police said that five of them had some health problems and were sent to the city’s hospital. Their main problem was dehydration.
After treatment they were all isolated in a room for tests to be conducted as a precaution. Albanian health authorities have been on high alert due to the Ebola outbreak in western Africa.
The east African migrants are part of a larger trend of small groups mainly from Africa and the Middle East trying to cross to Western Europe through Albania. They usually come from neighboring Greece and Albania deports them back to Greece based on a join agreement.
