TIRANA, Dec 24 – Police claimed the following successes in the fight against organized crime during 2008.
In the fight against drugs it had arrested or detained 466 persons, hit 40 criminal groups and indicted 172 persons. Police had successfully carried out 35 operations and also involved in 13 international operations. Italy had confiscated only 10 kg of heroin and 4 kg of marijuana coming from Albania, a significant reduction compared to previous years.
In the fight against corruption it had started 2,530 penal cases involving 2,606 persons, 463 of whom were arrested.
Police had also sequestered assets belonging to them worth one million Euros.
During 2008 there occurred 677 crimes against persons and 3,262 against properties.
There were 85 murders from 103 a year ago.
Family violence had 740 victims asking for police protection.
Interpol Tirana issued arrest warrants for 355 persons, out of whom 135 were arrested and are expected to be extradited to Albania.
During 2008 there were extradited 86 Albanians to their homeland and six from Albania to other countries.
