TIRANA, March 18 – Albanian President Bujar Nishani has met and congratulated Albanian Muslim Community’s new leader, Skender Brucaj, who was elected to the post earlier this month.
Brucaj, a young university professor, was elected in the post last week for a five-year term.
The two discussed promoting Albania’s example of peaceful religious cohabitation and harmony.
Albania is constitutionally is a secular country, but its traditional religious communities — Muslims, Orthodox Christians and Roman Catholics enjoy certain privileges under Albanian law.
According to the 2011 census, 59 percent of Albanians said they were Muslims, making it the largest religion in the country. The majority of Albanian Muslims are secular Sunni with a significant Bektashi minority.
