TIRANA, July 5 – Prime Minister Edi Rama on Monday invited all the new mayors elected in the June 21 elections to explain new powers that will be transferred to them under Albania’s administrative reform.

The country is experiencing a new stage in local management as 375 town halls and communes became just 61 municipalities.

Rama’s meeting was marked by a boycott from most opposition Democratic Party mayors.

The Democrats’ leader Lulzim Basha convened its mayoral winners at a different meeting on the same day in a show of defiance for the left-wing government.

The left-wing Socialists and their allies won 45 mayoral seats. The Democrats won 15 and one was won by a Greek minority political party.
