TIRANA, April 20 – Representatives of the European Union and UNICEF on Wednesday visited the Roma families who were forcibly evicted from the Tirana train station area in February.
Head of the EU Delegation Ettore Sequi, French Ambassador Maryse Daviet, Dutch Ambassador van den Dool, German Deputy Ambassador ad interim Jurij Aston and UNICEF head Detlef Palm talked with several Roma families who are temporarily settled in the Selita area. They also visited the remote tent camp built by the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities at the outskirts of Tirana.
The Roma families are currently supported by the civil society organizations and UNICEF; however a long-term solution by the Albanian authorities needs to be implemented.
That is a clear bell to the Albanian authorities that they should do what they promise. Discrimination of the Roma community is a hot issue all over Europe and taking care of them is a sign of how a government respects human rights in its country.
