TIRANA, Aug. 7 – Moscow is drafting a proposal to extend its food embargo to seven more countries which have backed EU sanctions against Russia, including Albania, Russian media reported.
The Russian Agriculture Ministry is working on a draft of a bill which will ban certain food imports from Albania, Montenegro, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Ukraine and Georgia – which have not yet fallen under Russian sanctions, the RIA Novosti news agency reported, citing the ministry’s press service.
“The exact list of the countries is being discussed,” a ministry’s spokesperson added.
Back in 2014, Russian banned exports of Albanian vegetables over the authenticity of Albanian products after it was identified that Albania was used as a cover for imports from the EU.
However, Russia’s ban on EU fruit and vegetables in response to sanctions imposed by the U.S. and the EU over its support for rebels in Ukraine, will have negligible impact on Albania as a new EU candidate country considering the minor trade exchanges between the two countries.
